Who’s Image Is in Your Mind?

Who’s Image Is in Your Mind?

Some of you know that there is no TV in our household. This is our sixth year without one and we don’t even remember to miss one anymore. It’s just not part of our lives. I’m right now at a conference in Denver and there is, of course, a TV in my hotel room. I turned it on the first morning I was hear to catch up with some news. I couldn’t believe my senses! All those loud, noisy and obnoxious commercials! I did not like it at all. I turned it off.

We see up to 3000 images per day. That is a total overload and we can’t process all of them. Images have emotional power and most of them are used in advertisements. They want to control us and our wallets. They want to imprint images into our minds. They want us to believe lies.

I don’t want that. I want to be my own person, filled and programmed by the Holy Spirit. I don’t want to believe the lies of the world. I want to control the overload of images that are targeted to me. I turned the TV off.

We were created in the image of God, not in the image what the advertises want to sell us. We need to be reminded of our origins in order to keep the right perspective in the middle of flows of the world. That’s why we need to prayerfully read Scriptures and get re-centered in Christ every single day. When our lifeline is open to God we are fine wherever we are, whatever we are sent to do.

Gracious God,
Thank you for creating us in your image.
Help us to remember our origin.
Wash us clean from all the lies of the world.
Fill us with your Spirit.
Be the image within us.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen

Q4U: How does the image overload affect you?

  1. Feel the same way about the TV, and have lived without a TV set for something like 10 years. That's at least when I stay on my own. It's not that I do not like it – I do. But one thing is what you mentioned. The negativity. The constant brainwashing. And one more thing – it's a time thief for me. I found that my daily schedule was adjusted to the TV guide. News at…. Some interesting show at… And before I know hours are wasted… and there are far more important things that I want to do.

  2. Anonymous,
You are so right about the TV being a time thief! Absolutely! There is no way I could find time for reading, reflecting, blogging, writing, and reading Scripture if I were watching TV! Thanks for chiming in!
    Abundant blessings!
