You Are God’s Treasure!

You Are God’s Treasure!

You are God's treasure

Grace is free but not cheap. We can’t earn grace but still it is not cheap. Because cheap grace is grace without discipleship, grace without the cross, grace without Jesus Christ, living and incarnate, states Dietrich Bonhoeffer. Grace is free but costly.

The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, which someone found and hid; then in his joy he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field. (Matthew 13:44, NRSV)

“Costly grace is the treasure hidden in the field; for the sake of it a man will gladly go and sell all that he has. Grace is costly because it compels a man to submit to the yoke of Christ and follow him; it is grace because Jesus says: ‘My yoke is easy and my burden is light.'” (Dietrich Bonhoeffer) This is the traditional interpretation of this parable and I am all for it. I love grace but I hate cheap grace. So costly grace it is then.

We can look at this parable also from another perspective and gain an understanding of how costly grace really was. How about if the man who found the treasure in the field and then went and sold all to be able to buy the field was God himself? What if God loved YOU so much that he gave his only son to die for you so you could be with God? How does it make you feel to be God’s treasure?

God did not give stingily. He went in his joy and prepared the path for you to come back to him. God loved you so extravagantly that he did everything so he could cherish you and treasure you. God loves you more than you can ever imagine. One way we can get glimpses of his amazing love is by reading his love letter to us, the Bible. Through biblical imagination we are blessed to grasp little tidbits on God’s astonishing love for us.

God’s grace was indeed costly for God. He gave his only son to die for us so we could be united with him. God’s grace is indeed costly for us, too. God’s grace is costly for us because it calls us to give our lives to him but it is grace because it gives us the only true life.

Costly grace is God with us. How wonderful is that?

Gracious God,
We come to you in awe of your love and grace.
Thank you for loving us so much
that you gave Jesus to die for us
so we could be made right with you.
Forgive us, Father!
Show us how we can love you in return!
Show us how we can live our faith out!
Show us how we can follow Christ!
In Jesus’ name,
Amen
