Seek God not Toys!

Seek God not Toys!

Do you have people telling you to splurge just because life is short? That the purpose of life is “to live a little, to enjoy luxury items, to get more toys, to have been there and done that”? “Because life is short and we live only once…why not to enjoy while we can?” That kind of talk leaves me confused. How about you?

That kind of talk tells about emptiness and how utterly lost people can be. If we think life is a disposable item we treat it as such. If we think this life is all we get, we might really think we must selfishly enjoy now because there is nothing else. So sad. Quite depressing, actually.

But life here on earth is not all there is. Whenever you start doubting this – and to not even get these doubts – emerge yourself in the Word of God. Bring these questions to God and ask the Holy Spirit show you what’s the truth.

It doesn’t take long to get (re)grounded in the Word, to get (re)oriented. Jesus got us into the way of salvation and he is the way, goal and destination of our lives. He gives the meaning for our lives. He guides us in all our decisions. He cheers us on when we are stuck in the mud.

When we have a compelling goal in life we don’t want to quit. When Jesus lives in our heart our lives are filled with purpose and meaning, hope and joy, energy and ideas. When we daily seek God we don’t need to fill our lives with flashy toys or items we can’t afford. We can put our energies into projects that will bear eternal fruit. There’s life and more life waiting for us! We can wait in the silence and know that we are blessed. Because God has provided us a bridge (Jesus) back to him.

Meanwhile, friends, wait patiently for the Master’s Arrival. You see farmers do this all the time, waiting for their valuable crops to mature, patiently letting the rain do its slow but sure work. Be patient like that. Stay steady and strong. The Master could arrive at any time. (James 5: 7-8, MSG)

Gracious God,
Replace all the doubts of our hearts
with your peace and truth.
Show us the real meaning of JOY.
Strengthen the sound of the eternal life in our hearts.
Enable us to stay steady and strong.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen
