Ask For What You Need!

Ask For What You Need!

Do you have prayer requests? Good news! We have a prayer hearing God who lovingly responds to us.

One day he was praying in a certain place. When he finished, one of his disciples said, “Master, teach us to pray just as John taught his disciples.” So he said, “When you pray, say,

   Father,
[How wonderful it is to approach God as Father! This never happened in the Old Testament. What a gift it is to be a child of God!]
   Reveal who you are.
[We are urged to keep on studying who God is. God will keep on revealing more of himself if we keep on seeking.]
   Set the world right.
[We are asked to pray for the world. We are all intercessors for the world.]
   Keep us alive with three square meals.
[We are encouraged to ask for what we need. God wants to hear from us and be part of our lives.]
   Keep us forgiven with you and forgiving others.
[Jesus emphasizes the importance of being forgiven and living in grace. But he charges us to be forgiving and gracious to others.]
   Keep us safe from ourselves and the Devil.”
[Jesus knows what we are up against in this world. We are to pray for protection. Not only from the Devil but also from ourselves.]

Then he said, “Imagine what would happen if you went to a friend in the middle of the night and said, ‘Friend, lend me three loaves of bread. An old friend traveling through just showed up, and I don’t have a thing on hand.’
“The friend answers from his bed, ‘Don’t bother me. The door’s locked; my children are all down for the night; I can’t get up to give you anything.’
“But let me tell you, even if he won’t get up because he’s a friend, if you stand your ground, knocking and waking all the neighbors, he’ll finally get up and get you whatever you need.
“Here’s what I’m saying:

   Ask and you’ll get;
[Do you have prayer requests? Good news: God is listening! God is answering!]
   Seek and you’ll find;
[Do you feel God has forgotten you or he is silent? Good news: God wants to be found!]
   Knock and the door will open.
[Don’t you know where to go, what to do? Good news: God desires to guide you!]

Don’t bargain with God. Be direct. Ask for what you need. This is not a cat-and-mouse, hide-and-seek game we’re in. If your little boy asks for a serving of fish, do you scare him with a live snake on his plate? If your little girl asks for an egg, do you trick her with a spider? As bad as you are, you wouldn’t think of such a thing—you’re at least decent to your own children. And don’t you think the Father who conceived you in love will give the Holy Spirit when you ask him?
(Luke 11: 1-13, MSG,  [my comments within])

The Holy Spirit is a magnificent gift to us. The true spirit of prayer is nothing else than the Holy Spirit moving in us. The Holy Spirit will intercede for us and will urge us to pray for others.

The more we pray, the more we get to know God.
The more we know God, the more we live in prayer.

When we live with God we can be sure God will answer to us. Not necessarily the way we want or when we want. But God will answer. God will be with us. God will lead us. God will give us his grace and peace.

Gracious God,
We bring our lives to you.
We bring our friends and family to you.
Reveal to all of us who you are.
Keep us alive, forgiven, forgiving, and safe.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen

Be blessed, my fellow pilgrim, as you ask, seek and knock! Wait for good because God is good!
