How Is Your Heart?

How Is Your Heart?

How are the matters of your heart?
How are the matters of your heart? Spiritually speaking, that is. When was the last time you let God examine your heart and cut away the thick calluses of your heart? This Bible verse got me examining my own heart this morning:

God, your God, will cut away the thick calluses on your heart and your children’s hearts, freeing you to love God, your God, with your whole heart and soul and live, really live. (Deut. 30:6, MSG)

Again we realize that it is God who cuts away the thick calluses, not us. But we need to come to God. We can’t do anything to earn our salvation. We can’t clean our hearts on our own. But we can come to Jesus and he will take care of the cleaning. We can come just as we are. No matter how dirty our heart is, the blood of Jesus gets it squeaky clean in no time.

A.W. Tozer thinks”that most Christians would be better pleased if the Lord did not inquire into their personal affairs too closely. They want Him to save them, to keep them happy, and to take them off to heaven at last, but not to be too inquisitive about their conduct or services.” But that’s not how God operates.

God wants every nook and cranny of our hearts.
God wants us to choose how we live our lives.
God wants us to choose the matters of our hearts.
God wants us to choose between life and death.

We don’t necessarily like giving our whole hearts to God. We don’t like losing total control of our lives. But when we let God cut the calluses of our heart, we can really breath in God. When we die to ourselves, we receive life, not death. Because God is life itself. When we live in him, we have life everlasting.

I call Heaven and Earth to witness against you today: I place before you Life and Death, Blessing and Curse. Choose life so that you and your children will live. And love God, your God, listening obediently to him, firmly embracing him. Oh yes, he is life itself, a long life settled on the soil that God, your God, promised to give your ancestors, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. (Deut. 30: 19-20, MSG)

Gracious God,
We come to you as we are
and ask you to cut away
all the thick calluses of our hearts.
We give you our whole hearts,
every nook and cranny.
We want to choose you.
We want to choose life in you.
Show us how we can live our lives
honoring you and doing your will.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen

  1. I totally agree, Mari Anna! I want God to reveal to me the areas where I’ve become calloused to Him and others. I cannot see those areas without His help. I love your words here. They are a challenge and resonate with truth!
