What is the calling of every Christian? God knows each of us uniquely and he has a particular plan for every one of us. But there is also a general call for every Christian. What could it be?

Jesus answers: “Let me tell you why you are here. You’re here to be salt-seasoning that brings out the God-flavors of this earth. If you lose your saltiness, how will people taste godliness? You’ve lost your usefulness and will end up in the garbage. (Matthew 5:13, MSG)

Our duty is to be salt. Not to do salt but to be salt. Because salt on its own does not do anything. But when salt is put in use, it makes things better. A pinch of salt will improve the food, add flavor or preserve food from corruption. We are to bring out the God-flavors of this earth and keep things fresh.

You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste (its strength, its quality), how can its saltness be restored? It is not good for anything any longer but to be thrown out and trodden underfoot by men. (Matthew 5:13, AMP)

We are indeed all called to be salt. How do we do that? Just by living out our faith. That means that we will be in contrast with the world. And only by being salt we can influence the affairs of the world. If we lose our saltiness we are not good for anything any longer. Our calling is to make life divinely tasty and spiritually fresh.

In order to be able to do that we need to keep ourselves from contaminating with other minerals and getting diluted in water. Because that way we keep losing some of our strength, quality, and purity. And little by little we end up losing our saltiness.

There really are different grades of quality and purity in salt. Only the highest quality of salt reaches our dining tables. The more we are blended with other minerals or diluted in water, the less useful we become. How then can we maintain our saltiness? How can we do our duty as the salt of the earth?

We need to stay pure.
We need to stay true to the gospel.
We need to stay connected to Jesus.

The world insists that we can pick and choose from different religions and create our own spirituality. But that’s not how it works. That’s how we lose our saltiness. If we pick what we like and skip what we don’t like, we are creating a new religion around ourselves. But our God is holy. He wants us to become holy like he is. That’s the only way we can be the salt of the earth.

 

Gracious God,
Thank you for calling us to be salt in the world.
Keep us from creating our own religions.
Make us holy like You!
Use us to bring out God-flavors!
May Your will happen in our lives,
In Jesus’ name,
Amen
