How to Enjoy God

How to Enjoy God

How to Enjoy God
Do you know how to enjoy God? Do you know how to practice the enjoyment of God? These are not trick questions, just very basic questions. (I wish I could hear all your responses right now. But, please, do comment below.)

There are many ways to enjoy God but they all have one thing in common: God can only be met and enjoyed in the presence. God is the great I AM. He is not I WAS or I WILL BE, even though he has always been and will always be.

God said to Moses, “I am who I am. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: ‘I am has sent me to you.’” (Exodus 3:13, NIV)

Because God is the great I AM we can only embrace him in the very moment we are living. Right now you can enjoy God while you read this. Soon you might enjoy God while holding a warm coffee mug. Tonight you might enjoy God while you cuddle your kids. But it only happens if you are fully present at the moment. Only if you are aware that God is with you right then and there. (God IS with you even if you are not aware of it but you are not enjoying God if you are not aware of him).

How could we learn to practice the enjoyment of God? Only by practicing the continual consciousness of God’s presence. But this is indeed a worthy goal. Like Brother Lawrence has said “There is no manner of life in the world more sweet or more delicious than continual conversation with God. They alone can understand it who practice it and savor it.”

We can learn to enjoy God by becoming aware that everything is a gift. By praying about everything because only when we leave the past mistakes and our future problems to God we can live fully in the present moment. I know it is difficult. But it is the only way we can truly enjoy God and life.

Because these well-lived now-moments will also make a peace-filled past and open up a blessed future. We need God’s help in this and he is happy to do so. By God’s grace we can form new habits. God wants to enable us to continually live in his presence. The more we consciously practice enjoying God, the more natural it becomes.

When the righteous see God in action
    they’ll laugh, they’ll sing,
        they’ll laugh and sing for joy.
Sing hymns to God;
    all heaven, sing out;
        clear the way for the coming of Cloud-Rider.
Enjoy God,
    cheer when you see him!
(Psalm 68:3-4, MSG)

Enjoying God is one of the biggest blessings in our lives. Because when we learn to see God in ordinary, we will begin to trust God also in extraordinary. When we learn to live in God’s amazing grace every moment of our days, we are truly blessed. Nothing better in the whole wide world.

Gracious God,
We want to enjoy you more and more.
Enable us to continually live in your presence.
Show us how to live fully in the moment.
Help us to be aware of you in ordinary,
open our eyes to see you also in extraordinary.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen

  1. Thanks again! And what a great addition to my reading today of Luke 8:21–My mother and brothers are those who hear God’s word and put it into practice. I love the message’s rendering of Psalm 68:4b Enjoy God–Cheer when you see him. That’s my goal for the day!

  2. In my earlier reading today- “Everything you have has unending blessing for you hidden inside, learn to receive them.” Coincides with what you have written, enjoy God everyday all day long! Yes this makes for a happy & peace filled life. Thanks for your added insight on this subject for me.

  3. I’m learning the blessed art of contentment…living in the here and now.
    I’m a goal oriented person, so this is sometimes hard for me.

    Even before I reach a goal, I’m already looking ahead at the next. It makes enjoying the present difficult. But through my son, God is showing me to treasure the here and now.
    It’s wonderful, it’s liberating and it’s all God.

    Recently I began to fully realize that God gives us 100% of Himself. That means there’s never a time He isn’t fully engaged in my life! While I had always known that, I hadn’t fully comprehended it (I still don’t fully comprehend it, but I’m learning and oh, it’s so sweet!)

    1. Yes, TC! It really is all God when we can treasure the present. I love the fact that God is always fully present to us. He is ready when we are ready.

      Thank you for sharing what you’ve been learning lately. God is such a good and patient teacher. Abundant blessing to you, sis, as you continue to walk in His ways!

  4. I sort of fight with him like we’re an old married couple. All. The. Time. But sometimes I remember that I’m madly on love and he is in fact God, so maybe I should quit fighting and shut up and listen!

    1. Thank you, Court, for sharing! I think the main thing is to have an authentic relationship with God. But, yes, you’re right….it’d be a huge blessing to also ENJOY God along the way! Bountiful Blessings to you as you continue your walk with the Lord!
