How to Wear Light

How to Wear Light

God shines upon us
Past few days I have had an image of God shining upon his people persistently popping in my head. So I started to explore what this image could mean. Our efforts to understand God will always fall short but we need to keep trying…because if we just get a glimpse of God’s awesomeness, we are truly blessed.

God wants to shine on us.
God wants to bless us.
God wants to dwell in us.

We are called to become children of God and live in Light.
We are even called to be filled with Light.
What does it mean?

While you have the Light, believe in the Light [have faith in it, hold to it, rely on it], that you may become sons of the Light and be filled with Light. (John 12:36, AMP)

Basically, it means to put your faith in practice. If Jesus has saved you, live out the joy of salvation in your life. If you are God’s beloved child, rely on the word of God. If you believe in Jesus, let the Holy Spirit fill you and guide you.

Practically, it means we need to fellowship with Jesus. If you are God’s very own, spend time with him. If you are a friend of Jesus, hang out with him. If you love the Lord, let the Holy Spirit abide in you.

But if we live in the light in the same way as he is in the light, we have fellowship with each other, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, cleanses us from every sin. (1 John 1:7, CEB, emphasis added)

We are called to live in the light in the same way as God is in the light. What does that mean? This verse from Psalm 104 gives us a hint:

[You are the One] Who covers Yourself with light as with a garment. (Psalm 104:2a, AMP)

God covers himself with light as with a garment. How could we cover ourselves with light as with a garment? How could we wear light? What do you think?

Just like human beings need clothing daily we need to wrap ourselves with Light daily. We don’t need God’s Light only once or once in a while. We need God’s Light daily. We need to be filled with Light daily. We need to live in Light all of our days.

Human beings also need light in order to live and grow. Hence we need to position ourselves in Light. God wants to shine his light upon us; God continually provides plenty of light to live in. We don’t ever need to go without Light when we walk with Jesus. God has provided everything for us to live well. But what is our response?

Jesus once again addressed them: “I am the world’s Light. No one who follows me stumbles around in the darkness. I provide plenty of light to live in. (John 8:12, MSG, emphasis added)

When we are ready to experience God’s presence, God will be right there enveloping us with his love. When we pray, the Holy Spirit is sending rays of God’s grace to us. When we spend time with Jesus, God shines upon us. And that’s what wearing Light is all about. Jesus shining in us, on us, and through us.

Let us pray with the words of Indian missionary Sadhu Sundar Singh:

O Lord God who art all in all to me,
Life of my life and Spirit of my spirit,
have mercy on me and fill me with Thy Holy Spirit
and with love that there may be no room for anything else in my heart.
I ask not for any blessing,
but for Thyself,
who art the giver of all blessings and of all life.
I ask not for the world and its pomp and glory,
nor for heaven,
but I need Thee Thyself,
for where Thou art,
there is heaven.
In Thyself alone is satisfaction and abundance for my heart;
Thou Thyself, O Creator,
hast created this heart for Thyself,
and not for any other created thing.
Therefore this heart cannot find rest in aught but Thee:
only in Thee, O Father, who hast made this longing for peace.
So now take out of this heart whatever is opposed to Thee
and abide and rule in it Thyself,
Amen

  1. I enjoy your illuminating posts.
Wearing the light, or letting the light shine through allows us to be with others and not cast shade on them. I have moments of petulance when none of the light is my own, but I suppose that is also true on some of my best days. It beats living in a world of smoke and mirrors. Thanks for shining this morning.
