The Shortest Easter Sermon

The Shortest Easter Sermon

Jesus is risen. Sin did not. Alleluia!I love Easter for so many reasons. My husband and I were engaged on Easter and our first-born son was baptized on Easter. I also love ending the Lenten season and celebrating Life. And who wouldn’t love chocolate eggs? They’re not only delicious but beautifully symbolize the new life we’ve been given. These reasons are all very nice – even blessed –  but there are even far better reasons.

They were saying to each other, “The Lord really has risen! He appeared to Simon!” (Luke 24:34, CEB, emphasis added)

The meaning of Easter can be preached in five words:

Jesus rose. Sin did not.

This shortest Easter sermon preaches loud and clear the essence and awesomeness of Easter. Jesus died on the cross for our sins, he was buried but on the third day he was risen. But sin stayed in the tomb. Christ conquered evil forces. Alleluia!

Easter really isn’t “just” about being exited that our friend Jesus lives. God did not just rose his only son. He also won victory over darkness. That’s why Jesus is only the first one resurrected. All who believes in Jesus will be risen at the end, too. Death does not have a final word. God does.

But in fact Christ has been raised from the dead. He’s the first crop of the harvest of those who have died. Since death came through a human being, the resurrection of the dead came through one too.In the same way that everyone dies in Adam, so also everyone will be given life in Christ. (1 Cor. 15:20-22, CEB)

We are thrilled because Jesus tramped sin and darkness! Through Jesus we can have life and more life, hope and more hope, and light and more light. Sin and darkness have been beaten. They won’t keep us down when we live in Jesus. We are free to live abundantly. Through Christ, with Christ, for Christ.

So no wonder I feel little light-headed on Easter. Wow! Resurrection! For real! For all who believe in Jesus! Wow! He is risen! Indeed! Praise the Lord! Alleluia! Yes! Yes! Yes!

Gracious God,
Easter is better than we can even imagine.
Thank you for giving us life and more life.
Thank you for going through all this trouble
to win us back to you.
We love you and we adore you.
We praise you forever and ever!
In Jesus’ precious name,
Amen

Q4U: What do you like about Easter? How does Easter make you feel?

Be blessed, my fellow pilgrim, as you boldly declare God’s victory over darkness!

  1. Easter is so special for our family because we come together and celebrate with worship and prayer. I also remember when during our younger days when we would decorate eggs and then hide them for friends and neighbors. Easter for me is God’s precious gift of new life so we can have a personal relationship with Him.
