The Last Word

The Last Word

The last word: Jesus
Do you always want to have the last word in arguments? Why is it so difficult to not to be the one who knows best? Why does it seem to be so harmful to be weak and lowly? Probably because we think it is about us. Because we think we could solve the problems, that we should have power.

But it is not about us. And we can’t solve the problems. And we don’t have anything lasting. If we don’t have Jesus, that is. Because Jesus really is the last word. Everything is about Jesus. And he is offering us lasting life.

How about it? Do you know what/who is the last word? Do you know Jesus? Do you reject his message? Or do you just delay your response? These are serious questions, for sure, but they deserve serious answers.

“If anyone hears what I am saying and doesn’t take it seriously, I don’t reject him. I didn’t come to reject the world; I came to save the world. But you need to know that whoever puts me off, refusing to take in what I’m saying, is willfully choosing rejection. The Word, the Word-made-flesh that I have spoken and that I am, that Word and no other is the last word. I’m not making any of this up on my own. The Father who sent me gave me orders, told me what to say and how to say it. And I know exactly what his command produces: real and eternal life. That’s all I have to say. What the Father told me, I tell you.” (John 12:47-50, MSG, emphasis added)

Jesus is our redeemer and he is the Word-made-flesh that is also the last word. We need to choose how we respond to his message. Do we receive it or do we reject it? Because Jesus will never reject us. We can count on it. But if we don’t receive grace, we are choosing rejection ourselves. Ouch.

No matter what you think or how much you argue, the last word is Jesus. Now it’s time for you to decide how you respond. And start living according to the last word, Jesus. Only Jesus.

Gracious God,
You do have the words of eternal life.
We don’t have any other place to go.
Give us Jesus.
Redeem us.
Restore us.
Renew us.
Show us how to live like Jesus.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen

Q4U: Are you living life according to Jesus?  How has Jesus as the last word changed your life?

Be blessed, my fellow pilgrim, as you follow Jesus wherever he leads you!

  1. What a great lesson! It is funny how we all act like children in arguments wanting the last word. I love your prayer at the end, especially “show us how to live like Jesus”- our ultimate goal. So glad I found you this morning at Missional Women.
