The Spiritual Immune System, part 1

The Spiritual Immune System, part 1

Soaring like an eagle

Now is the flu season. The best way to avoid catching a cold is to boost your immune system. What do you think? Do we need to have a spiritual immune system? I think so. Life is hard, life is rough, life is difficult – even if we don’t talk about spiritual battles. Our faith is on trial every single day. In order to be able to feel spiritually well and live our lives according to God’s will we need to have the best spiritual immune system possible! But make no mistake: God is our source of health and healing.

Praise the LORD, O my soul; all my inmost being, praise his holy name.
Praise the LORD, O my soul,
and forget not all his benefits-
who forgives all your sins
and heals all your diseases,
who redeems your life from the pit
and crowns you with love and compassion,
who satisfies your desires with good things
so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.
(Psalm 103:1-5, NIV)

The formula for spiritual health is very simple. It does not require magic, it’s all about God. It’s just like taking care of our physical health: We need to have a healthy diet and a good balance of exercise and rest. All that together equals as the immune system. Rest + Nutrition + Exercise = The Immune System.

Let’s see how that would look in our spiritual life. I know God is way more than any equation could ever be. I am just trying to simplify in order to understand how God provides for our spiritual needs. So this is what I came up with:

God (the Spiritual Immune System) = the Father (Rest) + the Son (Nutrition)+ the Holy Spirit (Exercise).

Of course, the unity of God is present in every action. But this formula could help us to see that our faith needs to have a good balance of the triune God in order to truly be the best spiritual immune system for us. If one part is missing we are not fully protected against the attacks of the world.

The triune God – the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit – is the best possible spiritual immune system. The formula also tells us that we need to take care of our faith. We need to feed it, exercise it and have enough rest in God. The we are soaring like eagles. [More about each of these aspects of the formula on the future posts, the next post will be on next Monday the 17th, God willing]

The Father leads us, Christ restores us, and the Holy Spirit energizes us.
The Father loves us, Christ heals, and the Holy Spirit equips us.
The Father calls us, Christ claims us, and the Holy Spirit sends us out to the world.

Gracious God,
How amazing you are!
You provide everything we need!
You are everything we need!
Be praised forever and ever
Come and restore us according to your will.
Boost our spiritual immune system.
Help us to fight the good fight of faith.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen

Q4U: What do you think about this approach for spiritual health?

Be blessed, my fellow pilgrim, as you feed and exercise your faith and have enough rest in Him!

  1. wow, sis, beautiful analogy for our Spiritual Immune System~we need balance for good health, the health of our Spirit Life is sooo important & the same applies to it~ TY! looking fwd to reading the next part, next Monday 🙂 blessings, in good health <3

  2. Not sure I’ve thought before about my spiritual immune system, but it makes perfect sense to keep it built up just as we would our physical immune system. Thanks for always challenging me in such positive ways, Mari-Anna.

  3. Yes…I believe that the best way to be immune to spiritual sickness (being conformed to this world) is to be transformed spiritually by the renewing of our mind (through the Word of God). This reminds me of my physical health. While I trust God to take care of me physically, I also take responsibility in how I care for my body. I also trust God to care for me spiritually, but I cooperate and take responsibility by spending time in His Word. Good analogy!
