Everlasting God

Everlasting God

Everlasting God
Wouldn’t it be horrible if God was changeable? We could not know what was required of us each week. Or it’d be horrifying to realize God is so out of date that nothing would be relevant. But we have nothing to fear, that’s not the case. Our everlasting God is the same yesterday, today and forever.

For the Lord is good; His mercy and loving-kindness are everlasting, His faithfulness and truth endure to all generations. (Psalm 100:5, AMP,*)

We can rest in God because he and his character and purposes are everlasting. He is never-changing. His faithfulness and truth endures forever. He is the alpha and the omega. Even God’s name proclaims this fact:

God replied to Moses, “I Am Who I Am. Say this to the people of Israel: I Am has sent me to you.” (Exodus 3:14, NLT,*)

God told Moses his name is I AM, not I WAS or I WILL BE or I MIGHT BE but I AM. God exists and is always present. That how it has always been and that’s how it will always be. God and his story will never be out of date like human stories. What is popular today will be out of day next year but God’s truth will last forever.

Everlasting God is also unchanging. With the words of J.I. Packer: “Nothing can alter the character of God. In the course of a human life, tastes and outlook and temper may change radically: a kind, equable man may turn bitter and crotchety: a man of good-will may grow cynical and callous. But nothing of this sort happens to the Creator. He never becomes less truthful, or merciful, or just, or good, than He used to be.”

Humans change in the course of life but God does not.
Humans are fickle but God is not.
Humans are selfish but God is not.

Blessedly our destiny is not in humans’ hands but in God’s hands. Everlasting God loves and cares for us. That’s why he sent Jesus to save us. That’s why he waits for us to come to him. That’s why he rejoices when we receive his gifts. We are indeed in good hands.

Because God’s character is permanent, his salvation plan is the same yesterday, today and tomorrow. All the promises of God has been so far fulfilled. And because God is I AM, an everlasting God, he will also keep the rest of his promises. That leaves us hope-filled and joyous. How can we be this blessed? Because God’s mercy and loving-kindness are everlasting.

Gracious God,
We are in awe of you.
We don’t deserve your loving-kindness
yet that is who you are.
Thank you for being never-changing,
constant and permanent.
Thank you for keeping your promises
and leading us home to you.
Be praised forever and ever.
In Jesus’ precious name,
Amen
