Sitting at Jesus’ Feet

Sitting at Jesus’ Feet

Sitting at Jesus' FeetWhich Bible character do you mostly identify with? Mary is the woman I mostly identify in the gospels. That’s why I truly enjoyed reading her diary in Mary DeMuth‘s and Frank Viola‘s brand new book The Day I Met Jesus: The reavealing diaries of five women in the gospels. The stories are found in Luke 10:38-42, John 11:1-7, 17-44, and John 12:1-11 (or Matt 26:6-13, Mark 14:3-9). The first one is the story of Jesus visiting Martha and Mary, the second one is the story of Lazarus raised from the dead and the last one is the story how Mary anointed Jesus with the costly perfume as one would anoint a king and prepare a corpse for burial.

In each of the stories Mary is found sitting at Jesus’ feet. She knew that was the best place in the world. She was hungry for God and loved Jesus. Because she spent time with Jesus she also knew what was to happen. She knew Jesus was about to die before Jesus said anything.

This reminded me of Martin Luther King Jr’s last speech and his prophetic words: “Well, I don’t know what will happen now. We’ve got some difficult days ahead. But it really doesn’t matter with me now, because I’ve been to the mountaintop. And I don’t mind. Like anybody, I would like to live – a long life; longevity has its place. But I’m not concerned about that now. I just want to do God’s will. And He’s allowed me to go up to the mountain. And I’ve looked over. And I’ve seen the Promised Land. I may not get there with you. But I want you to know tonight, that we, as a people, will get to the Promised Land. So I’m happy, tonight. I’m not worried about anything. I’m not fearing any man. Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord.” I’d say he knew he was going to die soon.

Sitting at Jesus’ feet is like being on the mountaintop. Only then can we spiritually know things like Mary and Martin Luther King Jr did. Only then can we live and move in grace. Only then we are able to learn like Mary to waste that which is most precious to us on Jesus. With the words of Frank Viola “For only by wasting ourselves on Christ do we life life to its highest and fullest purpose. And in light of that, remember that nothing “wasted” for His kingdom is ever, truly wasted.”

Sitting at Jesus’ feet is our way to know God and his will. Sitting at Jesus’ feet is the best place in the world. You are invited. Take your time. Seize the day. And, better yet, seize God.

Gracious God,
You are more that we can imagine,
we are less than we admit.
Yet you invite us to sit at Jesus’ feet.
We want to know you.
We want to know your will.
Open our spiritual eyes.
Speak to us and enable us to hear.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen

  2. I find myself often torn between Mary and Martha – one resisting the needs of the other. Be blessed, Mari-Anna – to have and tend Mary’s heart is a gift. Thanks for linking this week with #SmallWonder.

    1. Ah, Kelly. Thank you for your kind words. I think it is a gift to have and tend Mary’s heart. But it’s not always easy to be Mary in today’s world. Thanks for stopping by and sharing your heart. I appreciate it. Blessings upon blessings!

  3. At the Feet of Jesus

    At the feet of Jesus,
Iʼve found a place to rest,
And when my trials oppress me,
    I lean upon His breast.
I cast my cares upon Him,
    Because He cares for me.
The Son of God, my Savior,
    Has made me free!

    At the feet of Jesus,
    My troubles melt away!
    My soul has a restoring;
    My strength renewed each day.
    Upon Godʼs holy mountain,
    I soar to heights above,
To drink deep of the fountain
    Of Jesusʼ love!

    At the feet of Jesus,
    Mary sat and heard
    The wisdom and the comfort
    Of Jesus precious word.
    To labor or to listen,
    Mary had to choose,
But Mary chose that good part
    That she could not lose.

    At the feet of Jesus,
    I shed my broken tears.
And at the feet of Jesus,
    I shed my trembling fears.
    My solace is such sweetness!
    My comfort is complete!
For I have found my refuge
    At Jesusʼ feet!
