Spiritual Protection

Spiritual Protection

Spiritual ProtectionAre you spiritually protected? Do you use all the spiritual weapons God has placed at your disposal? Because, you should. That is the only way we can stand up to everything the Devil throws at our way. We really do need spiritual protection. More than we know. Because, as Paul put it, we are not fighting against flesh-and-blood enemies but against against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world.

10 In conclusion, be strong in the Lord [be empowered through your union with Him]; draw your strength from Him [that strength which His boundless might provides]. 11 Put on God’s whole armor [the armor of a heavy-armed soldier which God supplies], that you may be able successfully to stand up against [all] the strategies and the deceits of the devil. 12 For we are not wrestling with flesh and blood [contending only with physical opponents], but against the despotisms, against the powers, against [the master spirits who are] the world rulers of this present darkness, against the spirit forces of wickedness in the heavenly (supernatural) sphere. 13 Therefore put on God’s complete armor, that you may be able to resist and stand your ground on the evil day [of danger], and, having done all [the crisis demands], to stand [firmly in your place]. 14 Stand therefore [hold your ground], having tightened the belt of truth around your loins and having put on the breastplate of integrity and of moral rectitude and right standing with God, 15 And having shod your feet in preparation [to face the enemy with the firm-footed stability, the promptness, and the readiness produced by the good news] of the Gospel of peace. 16 Lift up over all the [covering] shield of saving faith, upon which you can quench all the flaming missiles of the wicked [one]. 17 And take the helmet of salvation and the sword that the Spirit wields, which is the Word of God. 18 Pray at all times (on every occasion, in every season) in the Spirit, with all [manner of] prayer and entreaty. To that end keep alert and watch with strong purpose and perseverance, interceding in behalf of all the saints (God’s consecrated people). (Ephesians 6:10-18, AMP)

I was reminded of all this when I got so exhausted a couple of weeks ago. Without really noticing it I had let go of the habit of putting on spiritual protection, the full armor of God, in the morning. (You see, when I wake up I usually say good morning to God and praise him. Then I move on surrendering myself and my day to him and ask for guidance and wisdom to use my time right and spiritual protection from any harm. Somehow the last part of my morning routines had become non existent. Too often we take some stuff granted!) And without spiritual protection in place I was an easy target for the enemy. I got sleepless and anxious and exhausted.

How did I got out of the funk? A friend of mine prayed for me, casting all oppressive retaliation of Satan at Jesus’ feet. And I was able to sleep again. [Just to be clear: I am not saying that all insomnia or anxiousness is caused by the attacks of enemy.]

Let me tell you, I will not – God willing – be forgetting about spiritual protection again. I should have known better. The bigger threat you are to the Satan, the more aggressively the enemy wants to destroy you.

But. No fear, my friend. God has already won this battle. Spiritual protection is yours if you want it. You just need to remember to claim and use the full armor of God.

In order to help you to do so, I have searched for some morning prayers you can use for spiritual protection. Of course, you can do it on your own words too. But these are here to show you that Christians have asked for spiritual protection through out the history of Christianity. And the need is not diminishing either!

Grant, O Lord, that we may live in your fear,
die in your favor,
rest in your peace,
rise in your power,
reign in your glory;
for your own beloved Son’s sake,
Jesus Christ our Lord.
(William Laud, 1573-1645)

The Lord preserve my going out and my coming in:
from this time forth for evermore.
O give your angels charge over me,
to keep in all my ways.
Order my steps according to your words,
so shall no wickedness have dominion over me.
(Treasury of Devotion, 1869)

Be gracious to our prayers,
O Merciful God,
and guard Thy people with loving protection;
that they who confess Thine only begotten Son as God,
born in our bodily flesh,
may never be corrupted by the deceits of the devil:
through the same Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen
(Ambrose, c.339-397)

And let’s conclude with the famous morning prayer by Martin Luther (1483-1546):

My Heavenly Father,
I thank you, through Jesus Christ, your beloved Son,
that you kept me safe from all evil and danger last night.
Save me, I pray, today as well, from every evil and sin,
so that all I do ans the way that I live will please you.
I put myself in your care, body and soul and all that I have.
Let your holy angels be with me,
so that the evil enemy will not triumph over me.
Amen

Q4U: Are you spiritually protected? How do you put on the whole armor of God?

Be blessed, my fellow pilgrim, as you draw strength from the Lord. Rejoice! There is power in the Word of God!
