Spiritual Rest

Spiritual Rest

Spiritual RestTo tell the truth, right now I am a bit disappointed with myself. Even though I know how to find rest in God I have become stressed out. There are, of course, many things that have contributed to my weariness. The end of the school year stuff, obviously. But I have to admit that I am also getting tired of waiting on God’s guidance. And now, after typing that sentence, I am even more disappointed with myself. I am in need of some serious spiritual rest. Thankfully, I do know where to start. Jesus is already calling my name.

Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy-laden and overburdened, and I will cause you to rest. [I will ease and relieve and refresh your souls.] 29 Take My yoke upon you and learn of Me, for I am gentle (meek) and humble (lowly) in heart, and you will find rest (relief and ease and refreshment and recreation and blessed quiet) for your souls. 30 For My yoke is wholesome (useful, good—not harsh, hard, sharp, or pressing, but comfortable, gracious, and pleasant), and My burden is light and easy to be borne. (Matthew 11:28-30, AMP)

Just reading of those verses touches my inner being. What a relief that Jesus knows what I need: ease, relief, refreshment, recreation and blessed quiet for my soul.

As soon as we step away from the rat race we call life and turn to God, we start sensing incredible peace. Our breathing slows down and the spiritual aspects of life reemerge. Grace surrounds us and we are reminded what’s really important in life. And who rules the world after all.

The beautiful thing about Jesus is that he does not make us to work when we are weary and overburdened. He invites us to come to him and stay until we find spiritual rest.

Neither do we have to pretend to be anything we are not. We don’t have to fake peacefulness when we are struggling hard. We can come to Jesus as we are and we will not be turned away. We are invited in and welcome to stay until we are rested, refreshed and restored.

And that’s what I am planning to do. My regular daily rest stops with Jesus are not enough right now. I need to retreat with Jesus for a little longer time. And I am really looking forward to ease, relief, refreshment, recreation and blessed quiet for my soul. I bet it wouldn’t hurt you either.

Gracious God,
I am so disappointed with myself.
I confess that I have tried to manage on our own.
I should know better, forgive me.
Give me rest, relief, refreshment, recreation, restoration
and anything you know that I need.
Help me, Lord.
Show me the unforced rhythms of grace.
Show me how to truly trust you.
Pour our grace upon grace, Lord.
Do you miracle work in my life.
Thank you so very much.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen

Q4U: Are you at the end of your rope? How do you find spiritual rest?

Be blessed, my fellow pilgrim, as you seek spiritual rest in Jesus!

  1. Ah, Anne-Marie, it’s so hard to be kind to ourselves and others when we are worn out. May you treat yourself with the grace and kindness with which you would treat a tired child. Blessings, friend.
