Where Your Treasure Is
What has been on your mind lately? What (or who) is the center of your attention these days? Is it a new car or ? marriage troubles? Or lack of a dating partner or job opportunities? Or are you very excited about new travels or hobbies? Your answer tells a lot about you. These questions lead you the very things on which your life centers. The answers will tell you where your treasure is.
“Do not store up for yourselves [material] treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. 20 But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys, and where thieves do not break in and steal; 21 for where your treasure is, there your heart [your wishes, your desires; that on which your life centers] will be also.
22 “The eye is the lamp of the body; so if your eye is clear [spiritually perceptive], your whole body will be full of light [benefiting from God’s precepts]. 23 But if your eye is bad [spiritually blind], your whole body will be full of darkness [devoid of God’s precepts]. So if the [very] light inside you [your inner self, your heart, your conscience] is darkness, how great and terrible is that darkness! (Matthew 6:19-23, AMP, emphasis added)
Knowing where your treasure is important because it leads you either to light or darkness. Your heart-condition matters because it is also a matter of life and death.
We’d like to either be the center of our own lives or, at least, decide on the things on which our life centers. But freedom does not come from doing what we want. Freedom comes from surrendering to the Author of Life.
When our life is centered on Jesus, we experience well-being like never before. When our main focus is Christ, we find ourselves doing things that have been prepared for us to do. When God is our treasure, our hearts are filled with joy and peace.
It is time to check our heart-condition. It is time to make sure our treasure is where we want our heart to be. It is time make sure we are spiritually on the right track and make the needed readjustments.
Because meaning or fulfillment is not found in selfishness. Joy or peace is not found in darkness. There is no contentment or real, lasting happiness apart from God. And the way to God is Jesus. Hence it is time to center our hearts and minds on Jesus.
Gracious God,
Thank you for your standing invitation to come to you.
Thank you for providing us Jesus as our way back to you.
Help us to see where our treasure is
and make needed readjustments.
Keep us on the right spiritual track .
Enable us to surrender you daily
and center our lives on Jesus.

Mari-Anna, in opening my own Bible to read the passage in Matthew, I loved that they are in red. Christ Himself is concerned about the focus of our hearts. May the treasure of our hearts be Jesus alone. Glad we were neighbors today at #SmallWonder. Blessings!

I’m so glad we have alternatives of things to think about instead of just ourselves all day. Sometimes I can get caught up in this pain or that problem, etc., when instead, I can look up and remember Christ and his goodness and let my treasure reside in him instead! Isn’t it funny how often we are unaware of what we treasure? The past few days have made me deeply aware of how jealous I am of a colleague and friend – it must be, in some way, because I treasure what he has. It’s hard to look at, but the beginning of repentance and return to Christ.
Jealousy – if used as fuel for prayer – can become a blessing too. You’re on the right track, Kelly. Repentance and returning to Christ are necessary stops on our faith journey.
