Saved by Grace

Saved by Grace

Saved by graceBob Dylan won the 2016 Nobel prize in literature “for having created new poetic expressions within the great American song tradition.” I’ve been touched by the faith-filled lyrics of Bob Dylan. He might not be the most typical Christian but he is a powerful example of the power of God’s grace. With the words of C.I. Scofield “Grace is not looking for good men whom it may approve, for it is not grace but mere justice to approve goodness. [Rather] it is looking for condemned, guilty, speechless and helpless men whom it may save, sanctify and glorify.” We are all saved by grace alone.

Bob Dylan’s lyrics of “Saved” expresses the essence of Christian faith beautifully

I was blinded by the devil,
Born already ruined,
Stone-cold dead
As I stepped out of the womb.
By His grace I have been touched,
By His word I have been healed,
By His hand I’ve been delivered,
By His spirit I’ve been sealed.
I’ve been saved
By the blood of the lamb,
Saved
By the blood of the lamb,
Saved,
Saved,
And I’m so glad.
Yes, I’m so glad,
I’m so glad,
So glad,
I want to thank You, Lord,
I just want to thank You, Lord,
Thank You, Lord.
By His truth I can be upright,
By His strength I do endure,
By His power I’ve been lifted,
In His love I am secure.
He bought me with a price,
Freed me from the pit,
Full of emptiness and wrath
And the fire that burns in it.

Saved by grace through faith in Jesus Christ

We are indeed saved by grace, not by our own works. It’s God’s work from start to finish. What could we do without grace? Nothing. But with God’s grace we are able to do whatever God has called us to do. We are so blessed. Thank you, Lord, indeed!

For it is by grace [God’s remarkable compassion and favor drawing you to Christ] that you have been saved [actually delivered from judgment and given eternal life] through faith. And this [salvation] is not of yourselves [not through your own effort], but it is the [undeserved, gracious] gift of God; not as a result of [your] works [nor your attempts to keep the Law], so that no one will [be able to] boast or take credit in any way [for his salvation]. (Eph. 2:8-9; AMP)

This is what faith and grace is all about

C.H. Spurgeon has said “If heaven were by merit, it would never be heaven to me, for if I were in it I should say, ‘I am sure I am here by mistake; I am sure this is not my place; I have no claim to it.’ But if it be of grace and not of works, then we may walk into heaven with boldness.”

This is what faith and grace is all about: Jesus Christ did for us what we could not do ourselves. Now we can be saved by grace through faith in him. We can be healed and made whole by grace. For real. We can’t but God can. Thank you, Jesus!

Gracious God,
Thank you for sending Jesus to save us.
Be praised for saving us by grace
not by any other method.
Thank you for your sustaining grace,
healing grace, empowering grace.
Be praised for bringing us back to you.
In Jesus’ precious name,
Amen

Q4U: Are you in awe of God’s grace and its power to save?

Be blessed, my fellow pilgrim, as you live in God’s grace!
