How to Leave the Past Behind

How to Leave the Past Behind

How to Leave the Past BehindDo you live too much in the past? Is it hard for you to move on and leave the past – its ups and downs – behind you? It’s harder than many of us think but it is possible. We all have things in our past that we’d like to disappear. But that’s not going to happen. What to do then? How can we leave the past behind?

How to leave the past behind

First of all, deal with your sins and mistakes; repent and ask God to forgive your sins. And then receive God’s grace and trust that God has forgiven you. God is faithful and just and does as he says in his word:

If we [freely] admit that we have sinned and confess our sins, He is faithful and just [true to His own nature and promises], and will forgive our sins and cleanse us continually from all unrighteousness [our wrongdoing, everything not in conformity with His will and purpose]. (1 John 1:9, AMP)

Second of all, forget about the past. When God has forgiven you, he forgets your transgressions. Forgiven means forgiven, you are not an exception. So, please, do forget about the past.

Brothers and sisters, I myself don’t think I’ve reached it, but I do this one thing: I forget about the things behind me and reach out for the things ahead of me. (Phil. 3:13-14, CEB)

God creates new things

Third of all, give all your sorrows, sins, regrets, worries, failures to Jesus. Your past will be great building material for a better future. Just give all to Jesus. He can create amazing things out of them. Nothing will be left unused. God can use everything for good.

“Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing! (Isaiah 43:18-19, NIV)

And, finally, don’t take your eyes of Jesus. As C.J. Mahaney has said “Rather than look back on our lives and agonize over “What if?” or “If only”, let’s remember instead His cry from the cross: “It is finished.” Forget the past, reach out to Jesus. Leave the past behind, let Jesus create a new future for you. All is paid. It is finished.

Gracious God,
Thank you for sending Jesus
to save us from our sins and from ourselves.
Forgive our trespasses, Lord.
Also, help us to forgive and forget our own mistakes.
Enable us to receive forgiveness and let go of the past.
Build a new thing in our lives.
Make our future beautiful in you.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen

Q4U: Do you know how to leave the past behind?

Be blessed my fellow pilgrim as you leave your past at the feet of the cross and move on into the future prepared for you by Jesus!

  1. Are you aware of just how much C.J. Mahaney needs to “leave behind?

    Lets see

    – C.J. Mahaney blackmailing the cofounder of his denomination.
    – C.J.’s lack of confession and repentance causing a major denomination split with many churches leave Sovereign Grace Churches.
    – A sex scandal the occurred while C.J. Mahaney was the Sr. Pastor at Covenant LIfe Church. (See Washingtonian article on this).

I find it interesting that you quote C.J. Mahaney

    1. Hi, Steve! Thanks for your comment. I had not heard of C.J. Mahaney before reading this quote. So, unfortunately, I have to say I was not aware of those things you mentioned. I just liked the quote. I’m sorry if this caused any distress to you (or anyone else). Thanks again. God bless you!
