How to Handle Burdens

How to Handle Burdens

How to handle burdensDon’t you just love those days when you feel light-hearted and happy? Seize those days. Enjoy them and don’t worry then about darker days. When life is easy, give thanks. And when life sometimes shows darker shades, do not despair. As Christians, we know how to handle them. Our God is bigger than our burdens and nothing is strange to him. We can trust and lean on him on our good days and our bad days, until the end of our days.

Even to your old age I am He,
And even to your advanced old age I will carry you!
I have made you, and I will carry you;
Be assured I will carry you and I will save you.
(Isaiah 46:5, AMP,*)

How to handle burdens

It’s an important life skill to learn how to handle burdens. As Christians, we simply handle burdens by casting them on Jesus. This sounds too simple but it works. Jesus has already carried all our sins and burdens on the cross. Why then would we still keep on carrying them? God has promised to take care of us. We just need to trust this applies to us too. And it does. All the promises in the Bible are meant to each one of us.

Cast your burden on the Lord [release it] and He will sustain and uphold you;
He will never allow the righteous to be shaken (slip, fall, fail).
(Psalm 55:22, AMP,*)

So we need to learn to release our burdens to Jesus. How do we do that? We give them to the Lord in prayer. Just do it on your own words, you don’t need to be eloquent. Just cry out to the Lord and say what’s on your heart. Anything that bothers you is a concern for God and he wants to hear it. So just dump your burdens at the foot of the cross (and don’t pick them up after you’ve finished your prayer). God hears you and he will lift your burdens and give you peace.

Give them to Jesus

It really is amazing how this happens. I just experienced it the other day. You see, I had been preparing for my teaching event all day. During my coffee break, I could not bear any more these nagging thoughts that were undermining my efforts: ‘that’s so stupid, you can’t go up there and present something so small and insignificant’. What did I do? I told God that if these thoughts were from him, he would show me how to make my presentation better and if those thoughts were the enemy’s doing, he would take them away. I blew my nose, finished my coffee. And then I was overwhelmed by this amazing peace. All those thoughts had disappeared and peace permeated every inch of me.

When the righteous cry [for help], the Lord hears
And rescues them from all their distress and troubles.
(Psalm 34:17, AMP,*)

Give your burdens to Jesus because he can handle them. God is so good to us. He has promised to be with us through thick and thin, on our good days and our bad days. We can count on that. Whatever is bothering you, give it to Jesus. That’s how I roll. Walking through life with Jesus is sweet. Even on bad days.

Gracious God,
Thank you for always being there for us.
Be praised for lifting off our burdens
and giving us peace in return.
We love you and praise you forevermore.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen
