We love opportunities because they represent hope, right? And that’s why when a window of opportunity closes, we start to panic as despair starts to take hold of us. But losing an opportunity is not the end of the world. It might feel that way but it’s not true. We need to remember we have – as Billy Sunday has put it – a God who delights in impossibilities. And with him anything is possible.

Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.” (Matthew 19:26, NIV,*)

So if our God delights in impossibilities, so should we. But it’s hard when we only seem to have eyes on lost opportunities or closed doors. But, you see, these lost opportunities are openings for God to come and rearrange our lives for the better. When things go against our plans or expectations, we should praise God for coming through for us in every situation, especially when we are at the end of our rope.

Delights in impossibilities

Next time, when a window of opportunity closes in front of our eyes, let’s lift our eyes to Jesus and wait for good because he is good. Our lack of opportunities is God’s opportunity to show off his power and might. When we see impossible situations, God sees new ways to arrange our lives according to his plan for us. Everything is not how it looks. God is more powerful than anything in the world. We can stake our lives on his word.

Delighting in impossibilities goes against the grain. But that’s Christian faith for you. It’s not about our abilities but it is about God and his ways and plans and power. All for our good. That’s why we can delight in impossibilities: God is at work in us, for us, through us.

Rick Warren has said “God has a purpose behind every problem. He uses circumstances to develop our character. In fact, he depends more on circumstances to make us like Jesus than he depends on our reading the Bible.” God has a plan for us. And it does not depend on our abilities but his love and grace. So let’s lean on him, praise him and love him. We are in so very good hands.

Gracious God,
Be praised forever and ever!
We thank you for your amazing plan to save us
and make us more like Jesus.
Thank you for delighting in impossibilities and
showing us your power in them.
Use them for your glory, Lord.
May only your will happen in and through our lives.
