Your value is in Christ - not in motherhood or work or success

As we are approaching Mothers’ Day I want to remind all of us that our worth is not based on whether we have children or not. Our value comes from the Lord and it is constant and non-negotiable. It does not increase if we have children and it does not decrease if we don’t have. Just like your identity, also your value is in Christ, not in motherhood or work or success or even relationship status.

But to all who believed him and accepted him, he gave the right to become children of God. (John 1:12, NLT)

How do we put this knowledge into practice? Start treating yourself with respect because you’re a beloved child of God. That’s why ask the person you see in the mirror what s/he needs and try to give it to her/him. Then treat each person you meet with respect. They are God’s children too. How could you lift their burden a bit? Greet, smile, open a door, hug, do a random act of kindness.

Accept one another, then, just as Christ accepted you, in order to bring praise to God. (Romans 15:7, NIV)

Your value is in Christ – not in motherhood or work or success

This Mothers’ Day, be especially kind to those who struggle with it. They might be estranged from their family or they’ve lost their mother recently. Or they’ve never been able to have a child of their own or they might have lost their child.

Mothers’ Day is a joyous occasion but so many struggles with it. If this is you, know that my prayers are with you. Know that your worth is intact in God’s eyes. You are loved. Know that your burden does not go unnoticed. God is at work in you. So wait for good because he is good.

Gracious God,
Thank you for the gift of life
even though it is not easy.
Help us to see our identity first as your children and every other identity as second to that.
Wrap all who are grieving around Mothers’ Day in your healing grace.
Bless all mothers and their children.
Teach us all to count our blessings.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen

Q4U: How do you feel about Mothers’ Day? Does your value come from the Lord?

Be blessed, my fellow pilgrim, as you build your identity around Christ! Nothing can take it away!

*[As you might have noticed, I enjoy reading the Bible in different translations and love comparing them. I have started linking the Bible verses to Biblegateway.com so you can easily read (and compare) them in the different versions I’ve used while preparing each post.]
