When Doubting God’s Love

When Doubting God’s Love

when doubting God's love

Today I’m writing to you who’s been struggling so long that you’ve started to doubt God’s love. I know life can be really tough. And when it keeps being that way for years, we’re tempted to start questioning even the great foundations of our lives. When you’re doubting God’s love, know his relentless love is holding you up even then.

So do not fear, for I am with you;
    do not be dismayed, for I am your God.
I will strengthen you and help you;
    I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.

(Isaiah 41:10, NIV,*)

Know that you’re loved even…

I understand what it is to feel overwhelmingly hurt and desperately lost. My own experience of losing everything was far from fun but I gained the wisdom that God is enough. Even when I had lost everything else I did not lose God. He did not forsake me. And he turned out to be more than enough for me. Ever since I’ve not been afraid of anything because I know I will always have enough in Jesus.

Can anything ever separate us from Christ’s love? Does it mean he no longer loves us if we have trouble or calamity, or are persecuted, or hungry, or destitute, or in danger, or threatened with death? No, despite all these things, overwhelming victory is ours through Christ, who loved us. And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love. No power in the sky above or in the earth below—indeed, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord. (Romans 8:35, 37-39, NIV,*)

Truly, nothing can separate us from God’s love. Not even our troubles. God does not leave us if/when we let him down. And our hardships are not pieces of evidence that God does not care for us or love us. God loves us no matter what. We can count on that even if everything in our life (or in this world) would scream otherwise.

…when you’re doubting God’s love

What to do when doubting God’s love is tempting? My best advice is to run or crawl to Jesus.

“Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.” (Matthew 11:28, NRSV,*)

We can’t fix our lives or feelings or make doubts disappear. But God can. So the best way to fight doubts or unbelief or tiredness is to run to Jesus. I can’t explain what exactly happens to us when we abide in him but it’s life-giving, hope-restoring, faith-lifting. We can’t live without Jesus. Fortunately, we don’t have to ever try.

So whenever you feel sad for any reason, run to Jesus. When you’re doubting God’s love, run to him. Abide in him. Learn to continually live in him. Give your sadness, your hardships, your troubles to him, and receive peace, understanding, and undeniable joy in return.

Gracious God,
Forgive us for ever doubting your love.
We need you, Lord.
The storms of our lives are overwhelming to us.
Save us, Lord.
Surround us with your grace.
Help us, guide us, inspire us to keep on keeping on.
Spring new hope in us, let us feel your love.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen

Q4U: How are you doing? How can I pray for you?

Be blessed, my fellow pilgrim, as you stick to Jesus especially while storms rage around you!
