Embracing the Good News Brings Great Joy

This is a year when we need good news for a change. The whole year has been packed with bad news, so we need some good news for sure. But the truth is, we can’t make them happen. Just like shepherds, we are in dark and we are afraid. Thankfully, God has some major good news for us too. And embracing the good news brings great joy.

And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. 10 But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. 11 Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. 12 This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.” (Luke 2:8-12, NIV,*)

Jesus is good news for us because, without him, we’d always stay in dark and be frightened. Without Jesus, we are spiritually dead and separated from peace and joy. And we don’t want that. We yearn for light, peace, and joy, don’t we? So we need Jesus to save us.

Embracing the good news brings great joy

Thankfully, God’s salvation plan is beyond wonderful. Hence there is light in the tunnel and hope on the horizon. There is good news that will cause great joy for all who believe.

So God offers us great joy. Who wouldn’t want that? (Especially in the midst of a pandemic that has shown us how vulnerable we are, how close to death we all are.) Joy comes from the knowledge this life is not all there is and we are all invited to spend eternity with God. Embracing the good news brings great joy indeed.

Gracious God,
Thank you for sending Jesus to save us,
to make us spiritually alive.
Open our hearts to receive Jesus this Christmas anew.
Teach us to live out the good news of great joy every day of our lives.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen
