Do you have a hard time letting go of your past? Do you ever feel you’re caged in? This post is for you. Mary DeMuth exposes ten lies and shares ten truths in her latest book Stop Living Small: Ten Truths Toward Your Significant Life. This post will tackle the third lie “You will never overcome the past” by reminding you that in Jesus you are uncaged for real.

In what kind of cage are you stuck? Broken friendships/relationships? Unmet expectations? A painful childhood? A cage of bitterness or control? It does not matter how you’ve ended in your confinement. The question is: do you want out?

With the words of Mary, “You were not meant to live a caged life. Bars should not cover the windows of your heart. It’s time to realize your freedom and live in light of it.”

Mary reminds us the longer we stay in our cages, the more comfortable they become. Although we might hate being in our prisons, we don’t dare to walk out. She continues, “The problem comes when we prefer the so-called comfort of a barred life to the open air of freedom. Whether ancient or fresh injuries placed us there, we have the choice to either stay inside the open-door cage or risk life in the great big world.”

You are uncaged

What to do then? How can we let go of our past mistakes, wrongdoings, hurts? I’ve learned the only balm into my and other people’s wounds is the grace of Jesus Christ. So I need to bring – as often as necessary – all my baggage to the foot of the cross and ask God to heal the wounds in Jesus’ name. The amazing thing is this: God wants to heal. He even sent Jesus to die for us so we could be truly healed.

This means that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun! (2 Cor. 5:17, NLT)

So your old life is gone and a new life has begun! Mary puts it beautifully: “Our past does not sum up our worth. Because we serve the God of the present tense, we can rest knowing that he loves us, regardless of what we’ve done or what’s been done to us.” It is Jesus who helps you overcome the past. When you let Jesus define you, you are uncaged for real. So spread your wings and let the wind of the Holy Spirit raise you up!

Dear God,
Thank you for providing everything for us to be saved and uncaged.
Help us to leave our cages to roam free in you.
Guide us, lead us, bless us.
In Jesus’ precious name,
Amen

P.S.

How are you doing? Are you ready to soar? Let the Holy Spirit show you the way to live freely in Jesus. Pray your way to new heights. Live in the Spirit and you will be able to leave your confinements behind. Not by your own power but by the power of God Almighty! Blessings to you as you let the Spirit lead you to new heights!
