I don’t know about you but I feel like my bones are dry and my spirit is weary. Truly, I need God to revive me, to give new life to me. I need the power of resurrection to renew my spirit. How about you? Are you standing in the need of Jesus? Because without Jesus, we have no hope.

Then he said to me, “Son of man, these bones represent the people of Israel. They are saying, ‘We have become old, dry bones—all hope is gone. Our nation is finished.’ (Ezekiel 37:14, NLT)

But maybe this is not such a bad way to enter the Holy Week. Perhaps, this is the best way to capture the meaning of the cross and resurrection. Because I can’t save myself, I need the massive operations of crucifixion and resurrection to revive my bones.

And I will give you a new heart, and I will put a new spirit in you. I will take out your stony, stubborn heart and give you a tender, responsive heart. (Ezekiel 36:26, NLT)

The Old Testament doesn’t speak much about resurrection but this passage from Ezekiel sure does. It tells us that we need God to revive us. We don’t just need a little bit of tending and sprucing up. Instead, we need a new spirit and a new, tender, and responsive heart. Hence, we need a total make-over. Painting over our messes is not enough and does not even work. But Jesus is more than enough.

Standing in the need of Jesus

So what are we to do with our sins, hurts, and all kinds of tangled messes? We are to give them to Jesus. He already carried them to the cross. Every single one of them. And as we know, Jesus died on the cross, was buried, and was resurrected on the third day. But our sins, burdens, and other messes did not make it. They’re still buried. Thank you, Jesus!

So whenever you’re bone-tired, remember God can breathe new life even to dead bones. Crawl to Jesus, he will take care of you. He will take out your stony, stubborn heart and give you a tender, responsive heart. Then you will know first-hand how resurrection feels.

And resurrection makes all the difference. Without the resurrection, we’d be without hope. Life would be just life, with no hope for the broken-hearted. No hope for sick and unhappy. And, certainly, no hope for sinners. Blessedly, God knew better and sent Jesus to save us. Now there is hope for all standing in the need of Jesus.

Dear God,
Thank you for providing us with what we need.
We truly are standing in the need of Jesus.
Thank you for loving us so much that you let your own son die for us.
Forgive our sins, Lord, and revive us.
Give us a new spirit and heart so we can live for you.
Be praised forever and ever.
In Jesus’ precious name,
Amen

P.S.

How are you feeling? Do you need Jesus? How lucky and blessed we are that God went through all that trouble to save us and unite us with him? Let’s thank him and praise him for all he has done. Now we can need Jesus and ask for his help in everything. Be blessed, my friend, as you remember all the good God has done for you!
