It’s Time to Sing a New Song

It’s Time to Sing a New Song

It's time to sing a new song
Has God flooded your heart with his love and grace? Do you love Jesus in a new and fresh way? Why don’t you sing to the Lord? And, please, sing a new song. If Christ has rescued you from the land of death, do not sing those old songs from there anymore. You see, it’s time for a new song.

I waited patiently for the Lord;
    he turned to me and heard my cry.
He lifted me out of the slimy pit,
    out of the mud and mire;
he set my feet on a rock
    and gave me a firm place to stand.
He put a new song in my mouth,
    a hymn of praise to our God.
Many will see and fear theLord
    and put their trust in him.
(Psalm 40:1-3, NIV, emphasis added,*)

It’s time for a new song

If you’ve been made right with God, it really is time for a new song. Everything has changed, also your song needs to be changed. You see, the old way of living needs to go. We can’t serve two masters, we need to choose who we worship. So if Jesus has saved you, it’s time for a new song. It’s time for a new way of life. Everything connected to the old way needs to go. It’s time for a new song.

So I tell you this, and insist on it in the Lord, that you must no longer live as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their thinking.18 They are darkened in their understanding and separated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them due to the hardening of their hearts.

22 You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; 23 to be made new in the attitude of your minds;24 and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness. (Eph. 4:17-18, 22-24, NIV, emphasis added,*)

Let go your former way of life

Do not sing the old tunes from the land of death if you want to grow in Christ. The old way of life is rotten, it’s time to let it go completely. And take on a new way of life according to God’s will for you. You will be amazed how wonderful it is to live with God. And how amazing these new songs to the Lord really are. Come on! It’s time to sing a new song.

Gracious God,
Thank you for rescuing us from the land of death.
You are amazing!
Help us to let go of all the old ways,
we want to be truly yours.
Give us new songs to sing.
Guide us clearly, Lord.
Lead us closer to you.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen

Q4U: Do you still sing the old songs? Is it hard for you to let go of the old ways? What has helped you in the process?

Be blessed, my fellow pilgrim, as you sing a new song to the Lord!

* [As you might have noticed, I enjoy reading the Bible in different translations and love comparing them. I have started linking the Bible verses toBiblegateway.com so you can easily read (and compare) them in the different versions I’ve used while preparing each post.].

  1. I was just thinking that I do not want to put on my old ways again, like I am wearing a favorite old shirt. I want to let go of my old ways, and embrace the new song. Even if I am nervous and a little scared at first. I am your Five Minute Friday neighbor. I hope you have a lovely weekend!

  2. I love your admonition to sing a new song. It also makes us focus on His continuing new work in us daily. No need to dwell on what was done in the past but to look for His fresh work in us each day. Great job!

  3. I’m guilty of listening to the same songs over and over. Thanks for this reminder to sing a new song! Visiting from #fmf number 17.
