If you’re wondering how to deal with life’s challenges or loud critics, my advice for you is very simple: Look up to Jesus and everything else will fade away. This might sound too optimistic or idealistic but nonetheless, it works. Changing perspective always works. But when we focus on Jesus, it’s even better than that. Focusing on Jesus brings God to our aid. And that changes everything, don’t you think? So pay more attention to Jesus than anything else and your life will be in balance.
Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, 2 fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart. (Hebrews 12:1-3, NIV)
Pay More Attention to Jesus than Anything Else
I know this advice goes against the grain. But it holds the truth and the life and it is the way to go. How then can we pay more attention to Jesus? We are told to do two things:
- Throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. We are invited to leave everything at the foot of the cross. And we are not left alone to deal with this, we get empowered by God’s grace.
- Run with perseverance focusing on Jesus (and not our problems or people who criticize us and especially not on our own failures). Jesus is where our strength comes from. We are filled with peace and joy and our journey will be blessed.
…and you will be blessed
The world is full of death and dying and in order to thrive in the midst of hardships, we need Jesus. When we pay more attention to Jesus than anything else, our life is filled with life and more life. Then we can praise God even in the shadow of death. And we will not grow weary or lose heart.
I don’t know any other way to live fully and abundantly than Jesus. When we live in Christ, we receive all that he is and has. And that is plenty more than what we will ever need. This way the better things lie always ahead. My friend, breath in Hope and rest in grace.
Thank you for reminding us of your goodness
and thank you for giving us life upon life in Jesus.
You love us more than we can fathom.
We want to throw off everything that hinders
and the sin that so easily entangles.
Help us to always pay more attention to Jesus than anything else
and make us more like Jesus every day.
In Jesus’ name,
Q4U: What does hinder you to pay more attention to Jesus than anything else? How has Jesus blessed you?
Be blessed, my fellow pilgrim, as you throw off everything that hinders you! Run with perseverance focusing on Jesus!
